The 7th Annual East Africa Finance Summit is going to be held on May 9 & 10, 2024. This year, the summit is collaboratively organized by The i-Capital Africa Institute, Addis Ababa University, Association of Ethiopian Insurers, and Nairobi Securities Exchange PLC, in strategic partnership with the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority, ethio telecom, telebirr, and FSD Ethiopia.
Timbuktoo in Addis Prelude event at the Science Museum marked a crucial stride in Ethiopia’s entrepreneurial journey. As we await the full launch of the Timbuktoo initiative by the UNDP Regional Bureau for Africa, emphasis was placed on the pivotal role of governmental support in nurturing startups through tax incentives and supportive legislation. Dr. Brook Taye highlighted Ethiopia’s potential as a strategic hub within Africa. Despite regulatory challenges, the event showcased the resilience of Ethiopian entrepreneurs, with optimism for upcoming reforms empowering innovators and unlocking their potential.
A panel discussion titled “Capital Market: Balancing Euphoria and Realism in Ethiopia” was held at Addis Ababa University’s College of Business and Economics. Dr. Brook, representing the authority, highlighted efforts to develop a dynamic capital market accessible to both elite and retail investors, including the emphasis on the debt market. Opportunities for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) were underscored, with Dr. Brook noting unprecedented directives facilitating their listing. Concerns raised by the university community were acknowledged, with suggestions made for the authority’s actions.
