The National ID Program is set to launch a digital wallet system that will enable citizens to verify their education and health information through Fayda, the country’s national digital identity system.
Rahel Abraham, Deputy Coordinator of the National ID Program, announced the initiative, emphasizing its potential to simplify verification processes. “We are working on a wallet system that will allow users to verify their education and health information with Fayda,” she stated.
The program is also expanding its registration efforts, with a goal of enrolling 30 million citizens within the next five months. While Ethio Post and Ethio Telecom are currently facilitating registrations, a new tender has been issued to bring private institutions into the system, and procurement of necessary materials is underway.
In a move to enhance accessibility, the National Digital Identity (NDI) recently launched a mobile application on Android and iOS. The upcoming wallet system aims to further streamline services by allowing users to digitally verify and share specific credentials.
The new feature is expected to ease administrative burdens, particularly for students seeking scholarships. “Currently, students must visit their previous schools to verify documents before applying for scholarships. We are developing a wallet that will eliminate this unnecessary hassle,” Rahel explained.
The wallet will also enhance data privacy by limiting the amount of shared information. “For instance, if an institution only requires a person’s age, Fayda will allow them to share that specific detail through Verifiable Credentials (VCs), rather than exposing unnecessary personal data,” Rahel noted.
As the National ID Program progresses, the integration of digital verification tools like Fayda’s wallet is expected to improve efficiency and security in education, healthcare, and other sectors.
