The Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) has ushered in a new chapter of leadership with the appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and two deputy CEOs. During a recent meeting, the ECX Board of Directors officially announced that Ato Mergia Baysa will take the helm as the institution’s new CEO, succeeding Ato Wendmagegn Negera, who stepped down from the role by his own choice.
Ato Mergia Baysa is no stranger to the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange. Since the organization’s establishment, he has been a key figure within its ranks, contributing to its growth and development in various capacities. His journey with ECX began at the Diredawa branch, where he served as a branch manager, before moving to the headquarters in Addis Ababa. Over the years, he has held multiple positions, showcasing his expertise and leadership skills. For the past seven years, Ato Mergia has guided the institution as Acting CEO, a role that prepared him well for this permanent appointment. Notably, he becomes the first individual in ECX’s history to rise from within the organization to the top leadership position, a testament to his dedication and deep understanding of the commodity exchange’s operations.
The Board of Directors didn’t stop at the CEO appointment. They also introduced two new deputy CEOs.

W/ro Kidist Stotaw brings a wealth of experience to her new role. With a proven track record in senior government positions, she has navigated complex responsibilities across various institutions. As of this month, she takes on the mantle of Deputy CEO for the Marketing and Trading Sector.
Ato Tamrat Tesema: Deputy CEO for Warehouse and Quality Sector
Ato Tamrat Tesema has been appointed as the Deputy CEO for the Warehouse and Quality Sector, stepping into the role previously held by Ato Mergia Baysa before his promotion. His career spans academia and public service, having started as an educator in higher learning institutions before transitioning to leadership positions within government offices. His diverse background equips him to oversee the critical areas of warehousing and quality control at ECX.
