In a landmark event held at the Science Museum, Ethiopia unveiled its first electronic passport (E-passport), marking a significant advancement in the country’s travel documentation system. The initiative, a collaboration between Immigration and Citizenship Services (ICS), Ethiopian Investment Holdings (EIH), and Toppan Security Ethiopia S.C., promises enhanced security, streamlined processes, and international recognition.
The launch ceremony, attended by H.E. President Taye Atske Selassie and other high-ranking officials, diplomats, and international partners, showcased the new passport’s advanced features.
The E-passport incorporates biometric technology, advanced encryption, and tamper-proof materials, adhering to international standards and significantly bolstering security. Simultaneously, ICS has implemented modernized passport issuance systems, designed to simplify application procedures and improve service delivery for Ethiopian citizens.
“The introduction of the E-passport is a game-changer for Ethiopia’s immigration services,” stated Selamawit Dawit, CEO of Immigration and Citizenship Services. “With improved security, faster processing, and internationally recognized standards, this passport will significantly enhance the travel experience for Ethiopians while strengthening our global recognition and border control.”
Dr. Brook Taye, CEO of Ethiopian Investment Holdings, highlighted the strategic importance of the project.
“The launch of Ethiopia’s first E-passport is a testament to our commitment to advancing strategic national projects that drive modernization and efficiency. By partnering with Toppan Security and ICS, we are not only addressing the security printing gap but also establishing Ethiopia as a leader in secure document production. This is one of the most important strategic investments to date and we look forward to engaging with investors to further solidify Ethiopia’s position as an FDI gateway of Africa.”
Kalkidan Arega, CEO of Toppan Security Ethiopia S.C., emphasized the technological advancements achieved through the collaboration.
“This project demonstrates how technology and expertise can come together to enhance security and efficiency in public services. The Ethiopian E-passport is a result of knowledge transfer, cutting-edge innovations, and a shared vision for a more secure and seamless travel experience for Ethiopian citizens.”
Toppan Security Ethiopia S.C. is a joint venture, with Toppan Securities holding a 51% share and Ethiopian Investment Holdings and its subsidiaries collectively owning 49%.
Beyond the E-passport, ICS is also rolling out a comprehensive digital transformation of its services. Starting February 24, 2025, the public will have access to modernized registration and issuance systems for visa, ID, and permit services, promising significantly reduced processing times and enhanced security measures. Further updates regarding visa services at Bole International Airport, company registration processes, and the public rollout of E-passport services will be announced in the coming weeks.
The launch event included an exhibition showcasing the transition from the Machine-Readable Passport (MRP) to the E-passport, highlighting its enhanced security features and the future of Ethiopia’s passport services. ICS will also conduct a nationwide awareness campaign to ensure a smooth transition and guide citizens through the application and issuance process.
