The Addis Ababa Light Rail Transport Service Organization has announced a pilot program to transition from traditional paper ticket sales to a digital ticketing system. The move aims to modernize the service and streamline the passenger experience.
The pilot program will initially be implemented at four key stations: Hayat, Menelik II, Qaliti, and the Stadium, with sales control measures in place. Passengers will be able to purchase digital tickets via the Telebirr Super App and through USSD codes.
Senior leaders from the Light Rail Transport Service Organization emphasized that this pilot test is a crucial step towards fully digitalizing the payment system and eliminating paper tickets entirely. The organization believes this transition will significantly improve operational efficiency and customer convenience.
To ensure a smooth transition, two rounds of comprehensive training have been provided to employees involved in digital sales and control. The Addis Ababa Light Rail Transport Service Organization has announced that the pilot test is scheduled to begin shortly.
For the past decade, passengers have relied on purchasing paper tickets at 39 ticketing stations throughout the city. The introduction of digital ticketing marks a significant advancement in the organization’s efforts to modernize its services and embrace digital technology.
